Here's a trick I learned from self-help guru Tony Robbins years ago. Instead of just sympathizing with her, try getting her talking about whatever it is she's upset about and then interrupt her by asking her something outrageous.

I'd interrupt them and ask, "Would you eat a bowl of live crickets for $50,000?"

As you could imagine, they would stop talking and get a funny look on their face. 'What? No, why do you ask that?' And you say, never mind, go ahead with your story.

Pretty soon, they're right back into it and on the verge of tears again and that's when you interrupt them again.

How about for $75,000? Would you eat a bowl of live crickets for $75,000?" Again, "What? Are you joking?" And you say, "no, never mind.

After that, they may even stumble for a minute before they remember what it is they were talking about. Of course, that's your goal.

You are interrupting their pattern of thinking. If you do it often enough, it becomes like a CD that is too scratched to play. They'll think about it now and either start laughing or have a hard time getting upset over it again. Or they may simply forget about it.

I know it sounds a bit weird but it works. I've used it many times.
